- 2 cups unbleached white flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 cup cold butter (or vegan butter)
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
- 1 tsp milk (for brushing)
- 1 tsp granulated sugar (for sprinkling on top)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
- 2 tbsp melted butter (or vegan butter, for icing)
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (for icing)
- ½ tsp pure vanilla extract (for icing)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, spices, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in molasses and milk until just combined into a sticky dough.
- Shape dough into a circle about 3/4" thick on a lined baking sheet.
- Brush the top with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
- Cut into wedges and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Optionally, drizzle icing over warm scones before serving.
